There're five types of backup file supported by Noki:
1) .nbu for PC Suite 6.82 to 7.1;
2) .nfb and .nfc for previous version;
3) .cdb: the contacts database for Symbian phones (Contacts.cdb in C:\System\Data\);
4) .arc: the mass storage / SD card backup file.

Please follow the steps bellow to export the content:

1. Click the [Browse...] button to open the backup file which you'd saved using Nokia PC Suite.
2. All the five supported formats (.nbu, .nfb, .nfc, .cdb and .cdb) are listed by default. You can change the type filter to narrow down the number of files to show.

3. Click [Save As...] button to convert phone book, SMS, calendar or memo to txt, xls or html file. The default name is 'current-date'; rename if necessary.
4. Chose preferred file type in the type filter
  5. Click [Save] button in the file saving dialog to start the conversion. The converted txt will be opened in Notepad if success.

Now the exported .txt, .xls or .html is ready for editing, saving, sharing and printing. The content of the file depends on the .nbu file, please make sure you'd backuped all the info via Nokia PC Suite.

2. Exploring and extracting files

1.Click [Browse...] button to open the backup file which you'd saved using Nokia PC Suite.
2. There'll be a directory tree slide down to show the content. You can begin to explore.
3. For image files, you can single click to show the thumbnails for previewing or double click to extract the file.
4. For Other files have more options in their right click menu.
5. When single click an item, the hint bar will provide more info (e.g. image size, file size in byte).

3. Multi-selection

You can multi select interested items by hold-and-drag the mouse and right click to bring up the action menu.

The popped menu is context sensitive - selecting different items might lead to different actions can performed.

Note: If you just want to get all text info (phonebook, sms, calendar and memo) in one shot, click [Save as...] button is much faster than multiple selection

4. Exploring and restoring Contacts.cdb

Contacts.cdb is the Symbian phonebook database. It's located in C:\System\Data directory. It can be copied to PC or backuped into the .nbu file using PC Suite. Noki support both of them.

1) if you'd save Contacts.cdb in a separate file and want to view the content.

Just browse and open the .cdb file as stated in "Extract phonebook, sms, calendar and memo into a single text, excel or html file" then save the .cdb in your preferred format.

After opening the .cdb, Noki will parse the phone book database and convert the phone book entry to standard vCard files (.vcf). You can then extract them to single vCard files and copy the vCards back to your phone via PC Suite's contacts manager to safely restore your phone book database.

2) if Contacts.cdb is packed in the backup file (.nbu/.nfb/.nfc/.arc)

If Contacts.cdb is in a backup file, you can view it in Noki's explorer. And the right click menu contains all the exporting options:

For phonebook in vCard, please check:

5. Exploring bookmarks

Bookmarks can be viewed in Noki with the URL's name in tree view and the URL in tooltip. To open the URL address in your internet browser, you can select "goto link" in the right click menu.

6. Exporting contacts as Outlook or ThunderBird .csv phonebook

You can right click on the phonebook folder and select “merge into an outlook .csv file” to export contacts as Outlook/Outlook Express .csv phonebook. .csv file can be easily imported into Outlook's phonebook. ThunderBird  .csv format exporting command is just bellow.

Please note that Nokia PC Suite and Outlook has different definition of the contact fields. Outlook will prompt to do some fields-mapping before importing.

Of course, the exported .csv phonebook can be viewed in Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice Calc or any text editor.

7. Exporting calendar to a phone

Calendar entries are located in the "calendar" or "calendar database" folder of Noki explorer.

There's two ways to export calendar to a phone:

1. Sync with Outlook

1) Choosing "merge into an outlook calendar file ..." in the right click menu of calendar to export all caledars as a .vcs file

2) Import the exported .vcs file into Outlook

3) Sync the phone with Outlook calenar via Nokia PC Suite

2. Extract and copy

From v7.1, Nokia PC Suite supports copy and paste of vCalendar items.

You can now choose "extract to..." command in the right click menu of calendar to save the calendars to a folder then you can paste them into the phone via Nokia Communication Center.

A trick:

Since Communication Center can accecpt vCalendar (.vcs file), you can drag a calendar entry directly from Noki and drop it into the Calendar window of Communication Center. PC Suite will happyly do the left importing work.

9. Text messages recovery

Text messages are also in several formats:

1) vMessage (.vmg) format

vMessage text messages can be extracted as .vmg file which is in plain text:

For Nokia has forbidden many models to copy-n-paste the text messages into the message boxes on the phone, the recovery is phone dependent. The known writiable boxes are:

  • inbox
  • draft
  • archived box

Please check if your phone allows to paste the text message.

Anyway, you can convert the messages to txt, Excel .xls or .html file. Then you can copy the file to the phone and view it using proper reader.

2) Mail2 format

When the text messages are saved in MMC card, it's usually located in the Mail2 folder in C:/private.

The messages are in binary format: which means you can't view the content directly. Noki will do some parsing and decoding to convert it to a readable format.

You can't copy the extracted SMS to the phone directly as Nokia doesn't allow it. But there's a workaround, please check the Tips and Tricks: restoring the SMS back to the phone via SD card.

As for vMessages, you can convert the messages to txt, Excel .xls or .html file. Then you can copy the file to the phone and view it using proper reader.

3) PDU format

PDU format text message is also in binary and is handled the same as Mail2 message.

10. Backup.arc recovery

Backup.arc is an archived phone memory onto the SD card. Most Nokia phones has this option. You can copy the backup.arc to the PC using a card reader (or via PC Suite). Check Tips and Tricks: backup.arc and MMC for details.

The most important data saved in the backup.arc file is contacts and text messages. The text messages are saved in Mail2 folder somewhere in the private folder; Symiban phonebook database file: Contacts.cdb also saved in a folder with an encoded name - as shown in the tooltip window bellow:

Noki can recover both:

  • Contacts.cdb can be recovered as described in Exploring and restoring Contacts.cdb.
  • Text messages in Mail2 folder can be exported as .txt, .html or Excel .xls workbook format. Then you can copy the file to the phone and view it using proper reader.

11. MMS (muliti-media message) recovery

MMS is supported since Noki v1.8.

A typical MMS contains 3 parts:

 1. a smil file: controls the layout of MMS
 2. a media file: photo, sound, video etc
 3. a text file: the text content of the MMS

You can right click on the folder to preview the content of the MMS in the tooltip. The image file in the MMS will show in the tooltip.

Noki provides 5 conversion choices for MMS:

The html conversion will keep all the content of MMS - it will embed the pictures in the html file and save other type of media files in proper folders and insert a clickable link in the html.

The txt and Excel .xls conversion will only convert the text part of the MMS.

Nokia doesn't allow to copy an MMS to the phone. You can

1) Extract the meida files and copy them to the phone as normal files or
2) Convert the MMS into an html, txt or xls file and copy the file to the phone with a proper reader.

Since Noki v1.9, packed MMS (MMS in sd card) is also supported:

The exporting of packed MMS is the same with normal MMS.

Skype will use the number clicked to start a call.

Done.

What about the International Country Calling Codes?

If the nubmer doesn't contain country calling codes (usually a + followed by 1 ~ 3 digits: +##). Noki will trick Skype to prompt a dialog box to select proper country calling codes:

Just change the country code if necessary and continue the call:

Click [About] -> [Config] to invoke the NBU Extractoin Filter:

It's simple: just uncheck the suspected segment to disable parsing.
